Reliability Implications of Emerging Technologies and Services

Currently, network reliability assessments focus on understanding and measuring customer-impacting outages based on existing wireless and wireline technologies. Emerging technologies (e.g. 5G, virtualization, ICN) can fundamentally alter the nature of network resiliency and the impact of outages. Therefore, there is a need to examine the network resiliency implications of new technologies, taking into account both physical and cybersecurity considerations.

This initiative will identify key existing metrics and requirements (if any), with a specific focus on services intended to be used for public safety-related communications. Further, the Focus Group will identify emerging technologies with potential impact on service resiliency, including items such as mobile edge computing, SDN/NFV, 5G, and peer-to-peer networks. The team will determine areas where the identified emerging technology trends could affect network resiliency, and provide insight into the potential impact of emerging technologies on network reliability. The assessment will only consider the broad “directional” implications of technology with a focus on the most significant impacts. If appropriate, specific high-impact technologies may be recommended for further in-depth analysis.
